Penfolds 2003 Bin 138

This Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre blend is 69% Grenache and is made from old vines from the Barossa Valley. The color is a deep purple and red, the nose shows aromas of dark chocolate, oak, and tar, flavors of ripe plum, tar, ginger, and spice. The wine is 14.5% alcohol and it shows that a slight bit on the nose which I don't particularly enjoy but it doesn't show that heat on the palate. The finish is nice and long and the flavors are complex. I wish the wine had a bit more depth and a thicker texture perhaps from having more Shiraz involved in the blend. It's not a bad effort but I think this wine would definetly benefit from 2-3 years rest in the cellar. I score it 88 points.
