Matanzas Creek Merlot 2004

The 2004 Matanzas Creek Bennett Valley Merlot is a great example of Sonoma Merlot and shows beautiful aromas of dusty berries, coco, ripe cherry, and black raspberry. The great complex nose carries over to the flavors which are of cedar, black raspberry, and a touch of vegetable, followed by firm tannins and a dry finish. The wine has a unique old world style to it and shows good terroir and complexity as opposed to the typical California style Merlot which tends to be very fruit forward and ripe. I score the wine 88 points.
