Newton Unfiltered Merlot 2000

For a 2000 Merlot this wine still posses lots of dark color and is not showing the usual signs of aging that a lot of wines from this vintage are now starting to reveal. The aromas are of black pepper, cedar, black currant, and a touch of tarish black licorice. The wine is showing flavors of black cherry, really dark chocolate (like the 70% + stuff), cedar, and ripe blackberry. The tannin in this wine is huge for this varietal and vintage and I'm completely shocked at the bold structure of this Merlot. Lots of grip on the front palate and a firm finish with good acid. A very serious effort and a Merlot for the Cabernet drinker. I am floored by the quality of this wine in a somewhat off vintage for Napa. 91 points easily.
