2005 De Tierra Tondre Grapefield Pinot Noir
A small production Pinot Noir picked from the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands, this wine shows aromas of tart strawberry rhubarb, red currant, and abundant candied red fruit. There is a slight greenness or touch of unripe fruit that accompanies the aromas and flavors of this wine as well as a wet stone minerality which ads to the complexity of the wine but necessarily is attractiveness. The flavors follow suit with the aromas and show nuances of tart and fresh strawberry, wet stone, and unripe fruit characteristics. I can't say I love this wine because it appears to be unripe and lacks depth but perhaps because it is single vineyard this is what those vines needed to express from the vintage. I would be interested in tasting a blended offering from De Tierra to see if more ripeness and deep fruit would emerge. I score the wine 85 points.
