2005 Christian Moueix Appellation Series

The famed Bordeaux and Napa Valley winemaker Christian Moueix, whose family owns the greatest estates of Pomerol including Petrus, has recently released his new Appellation Series Bordeaux wines. These include Pomerol, Saint Emilion, and Medoc wines that showcase characteristics of each appellation at a fraction of the price of most appellation designate wines. I recently had the opportunity to taste each wine and will review them in the order I tasted them.

2005 Christian Moueix Pomerol
- 95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc
This Pomerol like the picture above states is perhaps the best priced Pomerol available on the market in years. After tasting the wine, I also agree that the price is generous enough to consider purchasing a case before the wines grab more attention and demand a high price point. The bouquet is quite complex and boasts notes of cherry, leather, and a slight touch of green peppar. The flavors profile is very elegant but the wine has extreme power and body. Tart cherry, cedar, green and earthy underlining notes, and a grip of tannin make this wine a complex but complicated red. This wine could use a few years in bottle before it sheds it's true color. Heavy tannin and oak overpower the fruit core but in time this wine will sing. The finish is long and intense and crys for food. 90 Points

2005 Christian Moueix St. Emilion
- 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc
The Saint Emilion is true to it's bouquet and shows amazing ripe cherry, blackberry, seductive dark cacao, and elegant unfolding floral layers. This wine is massive! Tannin for days, I mean this wine is way to young to fully enjoy at the present time. However, this wine shows a fruitfull core of blackberry and black cherry that will eventually catch up to the structure in time. Strangely enough this wine reminds me of a young Dominus because of it's touting backbone. Hard to believe this wine is composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. I would rather consume the Pomerol right now but this wine could well out perform the Pomerol in five years from now. 90 Points

2005 Christian Moueix Medoc
- 50 % Cab Sauv, 30% Merlot, 15% Cab Franc, 5% Petit Verdot
A far more developed and riper effort overall which may indicate the power of 2005 Merlot from the right bank of Bordeaux of Christians ability to craft a ripe, fruit forward Cabernet based wine. The nose shows notes of ripe red raspberry and plum which come across rounder, more lucious, and more fruit expressive than the two previous wines. The flavors are also round, rich, and smooth and express dark plum, blackberry, leather, and spice. This is the best tasting wine of the lot in my honest opinion. I like the pure fruit and focus on balance with the oak. 91 Points
