2007 Crios de Susana Balbo Malbec

This has been one of my favorite producers of wine from Argentina for a few years. I really enjoy the Crios Torrontes and Syrah-Bonarda blend as well. Susana Balbo has made wine for 22 years and puts her best efforts into her Susana Balbo label and but also sets aside fruit for her Crios label which are wines made to be enjoyed in their youth. The 2007 Malbec is 100% Malbec aged 9 months in 50% 1-year French and 50% 1-year American barriques. The aromas boast gobs of exotic black fruits, sweet black licorice, and hints of toasted oak or a smokiness. The wine surprised me with it's very new world approach of inky, dark, juicy, and candied flavors, sweet black currant, licorice and loads of cassis. Very similar to many Aussie wines stylistically. This is a lot of wine for $12-$13 bucks and a definite buy at 90 points!
