Groth Vineyards & Winery
Yesterday a rep from Groth vineyards came into the cellar and jived a bit about the winery and poured me a few of their current vintages. She poured the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc (88 points), the 2006 Chardonnay (88 points), and the 2005 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (90+ points). The wines were very nice and the whites showed a good amount of crisp acidity. The Cab was very powerful and tasted like Oakville fruit, so I was impressed. I thought the history of the winery was very unique and interesting. From the owners involvement with the old video game company Atari, to the planting of their first vineyards in Oakville by the late and great Justin Meyer. They actually almost bought the famous "Les Pierres" Chardonnay vineyard but decided to buy 121 acres in Napa's Oakville instead, which turned out to be a wise move for them. I have frequented many Napa wineries but have never had the chance to stop in at Groth. Maybe next time I decide to cruise the Oakville cross I drop a hat!
