2008 Ballentine Vineyards "Pocai Vineyard" Chenin Blanc

There are but few Chenin Blancs produced in the Napa Valley and even fewer that are 100% single vineyard Chenin Blanc. The Pocai Vineyard is located on the valley floor, resting between Maple Lane and the Silverado Trail near Calistoga. Although the fertility of the soil is low, the drainage is excellent. Yields from the Pocai Vineyard are small, 3 to 4 tons per acre. The fruit is intense and it is hand picked at harvest. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc are all grown at the Pocai Vineyard.

The bouquet of this wine is full of citrus notes, mineral, grapefruit, and hints of sarsaparilla. The flavors are simple and are translated onto the palate with nice crisp acidity and a round body. The main flavors expressed are of citrus fruits such as mandarin and ugli fruit. The finish has quite nice length but the wine lacks a bit of complexity and interest. 85+ pts
