The Grand Cru's of Bordeaux's Pauillac

Pauillac is most definitely one of Bordeaux's most prolific appellations. Located between the great Gironde river and Canal du Midi in the Médoc, Pauillac is home to 18 grands crus classés which are some of France's most prestigious wines. Below is a list of all of these great growths and just a touch of information about each of these Bordeaux vineyards.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild
Growth Classification: First Growth
Vineyard Acreage: The vineyard is among the more sizable in the Médoc at 107 hectares, and produces around 35,000 cases a year, of which between 15,000 and 25,000 are the grand vin.
Grapes Planted:70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, and the final wine is between 80% and 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% and 20% Merlot, and up to 3% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Chateau Latour
Growth Classification: First Growth
Vineyard Acreage: The estate is comprised of 78 hectares (190 acres) of vineyard, of which a 47-hectare (120-acre) portion near the chateau is named l'Enclos, where the fruit is used only for the grand vin.
Grapes Planted: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grand vin Chateau Latour is most commonly a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, with the remainder Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and typically has an yearly production of 18,000 cases.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Growth Classification: First Growth
Vineyard Acreage: The estate has 203 acres of grape vines
Grapes Planted: Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron
Growth Classification: Second Growth
Vineyard Acreage: 73 hectares are planted to vine
Grapes Planted: Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (35%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and Petit Verdot (1%).

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
Growth Classification: Second Growth
Vineyard Acreage: 75-87 Hectares different sources have different numbers
Grapes Planted: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot, Pichon Lalande has an abnormally high amount of Merlot for a Pauillac property

Chateau Duhart-Milon
Growth Classification: Fourth Growth
Vineyard Acreage: 175 acres, 73 planted to vine
Grapes Planted: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot

Chateau Pontet-Canet
Growth Classification: Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:120 hectares (300 acres) 80 ha (200 acres) are under vine
Grapes Planted: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc

Chateau Batailley
Growth Classification: Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:57 hectares (140 acres)
Grapes Planted:70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot

Chateau Haut-Batailley
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:22 hectares (54 acres)
Grapes Planted:65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage: 36 hectares (90 acres)
Grapes Planted: Cabernet Sauvignon makes up 75% of the total plantings and the rest belonging to Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%)

Chateau Grand-Puy-Ducasse
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:40 hectares
Grapes Planted:62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot

Chateau Lynch-Bages
Growth Classification:FIfth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:90 hectares (220 acres)
Grapes Planted:73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot

Chateau Lynch-Moussas
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:60 hectares (150 acres) and an annual production of 20,000 cases
Grapes Planted:70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

Chateau d'Armailhac
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:126 acres, 50.9 hectares planted to vine, 18000 case annual production
Grapes Planted:56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot

Chateau Haut-Bages-Libéral
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:30 hectares (74 acres)
Grapes Planted:70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot

Chateau Pédesclaux
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:46 hectares and produces about 8,000 cases of wine every year
Grapes Planted:47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet franc.

Chateau Clerc-Milon
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:41 hectares (100 acres)
Grapes Planted:49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère

Chateau Croizet Bages
Growth Classification:Fifth Growth
Vineyard Acreage:30 hectares
Grapes Planted:60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc
