The left bank in Bordeaux gets so much more attention then the wineries on the right, primarily because of the 1855 Classification in Bordeaux that classified the top Chateaux on the left bank. Why were the Bordeaux vineyards located on the right excluded? Well, primarily because of the status and money the families on the left bank had garnered all for themselves. Even today, the classified growths on the left bank seem to demand the most press and are far more coveted then their neighboring wineries in both Pomerol and St. Emilion.
Of course there are a few exceptions to the rule. Chateau Petrus, Chateau Cheval Blanc, and Chateau Ausone are just a few of the most prized wines of the right bank that are extremely expensive (Petrus being the world's most expensive) and are highly in demand amongst collectors. Below are several examples of highly collectible and incredibly age-worthy reds for right bank vineyards that are worth buying for your cellar:
Chateau Pavie - Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé
Chateau Angelus - Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé
Clos l'Eglise - Pomerol
Château La Fleur-Pétrus - Pomerol
Château Canon La Gaffelière - Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé
Vieux Château Certan - Pomerol
Château Figeac - Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé
Château Clinet - Pomerol
Château l'Évangile - Pomerol
Collecting these wines in addition to those that you purchase from Bordeaux vineyards on the left bank will ensure that you have a well rounded selection from the whole of Bordeaux rather than just having reds from one side of the river. There are of course dozens of other amazing wines on the right bank and I would implore you to investigate some of the lesser known properties in good vintages in order to find great value driven reds.
